When I was your age…

So, i was just thinking:

a) I am a big dumb stupid geek for thinking about work at 1 am

-and -

b) only a year ago, I thought that the pinnacle of campaign internet mobilization was making sure that supporters could find info about the candidate, give money, see comparisons with competing candidates, send letters to the editor, get a lawn sign, volunteer, subscribe for email alerts and print out flyers (incidently, the websites of major candidates in the most competitive US Senate and House elections in 2002 only included about 4 or 5 of the above).

Now, I am fixated on learing more about social-networking software, blogs, and even more crazy crap.

Teleflip

At the risk of being an unwitting marketing whore, I just found out about the site Teleflip.com which allows you to send a text message to any mobile by emailing the phone number @teleflip.com. And it is free.

My question is, will the ad revenue be enough (they attach a short ad to the message) to support the firm? hmmm….

Political Networking Mis-Applied

So, the other day, I get a text-message on my mobile:

Fr: DeanWireless

Dean attacked in despicable ad that uses images of Bin Laden. The Bat is up — Don’t Tread on Dean! See www.blogforamerica.com for info.

And at first I thought - see, THAT is the kind of rapid reaction that makes Dean’s Network so powerful.

Then I got to thinking about how so many campaigns and campaign technologists get bogged down into the “everything is a crisis” mode and forget to do the boring, slow network building that is required to prepare for those situations when you DO need $1.4 million donated overnight.

I think that it is fair to say that most folks/campaigns forget that part. Too bad.

Morris on the Right

Dick Morris has been a huge advocate of the interent and politics… and, via an interview with Chris Lydon, correctly points out that the Net-roots are NOT limited to Deaniacs…

“Let’s remember,” that the Internet is more male than female, more right-wing than left-wing, more upscale than downscale. The Republican base is seething with activity… So I think this kind of viral bottom-up growth (which is what the Internet is all about) will be as much Republican as Democratic.”

Read the post on Lydon’s The Blogging of the President or listen to the interview

It makes perfect sense to me.. I mean, the Neo-Nazis were one of the first political groups online - ok. not that I am comparing the GOP to Neo-Nazis… but clearly the right can do the tech thing. AND they have the money.

Ideas from the ‘Roots

So, via Network-Centric Advocacy, there was a FANTASTIC blog thread, on Blog for America back in October, with a bunch of their folks posting ideas for added features, etc.

They recommend a LOT of stuff but there are some good ideas - proving once again that the ground troops can provide very useful info to us campaign professionals.
